Signs you need belt or hose service
Rubber wears out with heat and age, even on a car that doesn't get driven much. Watch for these signs:
- Squealing or chirping. A worn belt, a weak tensioner or a bad pulley can all make noise, especially on a cold start.
- Cracked, frayed or glazed belts. Cracks across the ribs or a shiny, slick surface mean the belt is near the end of its life.
- Coolant leaks or a sweet smell. A leaking hose or loose clamp drips coolant, which smells sweet when it hits hot parts.
- Running hot. A leaking hose lowers coolant, and a slipping belt can keep the water pump from doing its job.
- Heavy steering or a battery light. If both show up at once, the serpentine belt may have slipped off or broken.
- Soft, swollen or bulging hoses. A hose that feels mushy or has a bulge can burst without warning.
Timing belts are different
A timing belt keeps the engine's internal parts moving in sync. On many engines, if it snaps, parts inside can collide and cause serious damage. It usually gives no warning before it fails, so the replacement interval in your owner's manual matters.

Tell us what you're hearing or seeing, and your mileage if you're asking about a timing belt. We'll look at the belts, hoses, pulleys and tensioners together, since worn parts tend to fail around the same time. You'll have an estimate within 48 hours.
Our inspection and repair rate is $120 per hour for general vehicles and $150 per hour for custom cars. Minor repairs are usually done in 24 to 48 hours, and most work is finished within a week.
We welcome customer-supplied parts. Our warranty covers new parts for 60 days or 3,000 miles, and labor for 60 days or 3,000 miles. We can help with insurance paperwork too.
