Signs you need transmission repair
Your transmission sends engine power to the wheels. When it starts to fail, you'll usually feel it:
- Slipping. The engine revs up but the car doesn't accelerate the way it should, or it seems to drop out of gear.
- Delayed or harsh shifts. A long pause when you shift into Drive or Reverse, or shifts that bang, can mean low fluid, internal wear or a control problem.
- Shuddering. A shake while accelerating at steady speeds can come from the torque converter or clutches inside the transmission.
- Fluid under the car. Red, pink or brown fluid near the middle of the vehicle is often transmission fluid.
- Burning smell. Overheated fluid smells burnt and can mean the transmission is working too hard or running low.
- Warning lights. Many cars set a check engine code or show a transmission light when shifting isn't right.
Transmission problems tend to get worse with driving. Catching them early can mean a smaller repair.
What to expect
Tell us what the car does and when: cold or warm, at certain speeds, or in certain gears. We check the fluid, scan for codes and road test the vehicle to narrow down the cause. You'll get an estimate within 48 hours, with the options laid out.
Our inspection and repair rate is $120 per hour for general vehicles and $150 per hour for custom cars. Minor repairs are usually done in 24 to 48 hours. Major transmission repairs generally need at least a week.
If you've already found a replacement transmission or parts, we welcome customer-supplied parts. Our warranty covers new parts for 60 days or 3,000 miles, and labor for 60 days or 3,000 miles. If the damage is part of an insurance claim, we can help with the paperwork.
